Booking Island Hopping in Langkawi: Seats, Private Boats, Deposits and Weather Days

Island hopping is one of the simplest reservations in Langkawi, and one of the easiest to get slightly wrong. The core trip is fixed: four hours, three islands. What you reserve is not. A seat on a shared boat and a whole private boat come with different start times, jetty options, payment rules and cancellation windows, and a day of strong wind, rough sea or thunderstorms postpones or cancels either one.

The takeaway up front: decide first whether you are booking a seat or a boat, because that choice sets the price unit, the jetty, the deposit and how late you can cancel. Then get the date, time, jetty, transfer and extras confirmed in one WhatsApp thread before the day.

The worked example, and this guide's sponsor, is LangkawiGo, a MOTAC-licensed tour operator based in Langkawi that books tours, boat trips, transfers and car rental directly over WhatsApp. It publishes the terms this guide asks you to check, from deposits to a weather rule. Prices and terms are as listed on its site in October 2026; confirm them when you book.

Seat or boat: what you are reserving

In reservation terms these are two products. A sharing seat is capacity on a scheduled departure: one place on a boat that leaves at a set time with other guests, the way a class booking claims one spot in a session. A private boat reserves the whole resource for part of the day: the boat and its captain are yours, you pick the start time within a window, and the price is per boat whether two of you board or eight. It is the logic behind capacity-based reservations.

Every LangkawiGo island-hopping package lands at Dayang Bunting Island to visit Pregnant Maiden Lake, goes eagle watching at Singa Besar Island and makes a beach stop at Beras Basah Island. Each lasts 4 hours and includes a boat ride with a local captain, life jackets and WhatsApp booking support. The hotel transfer is free from Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah; other areas are at an extra charge. LangkawiGo says it owns and manages its own boats for island-hopping departures from Teluk Baru and Kuah.

The three island-hopping bookings, side by side

As listed in October 2026:

Sharing seat Private boat, Teluk Baru Private boat, Kuah
Price RM50 per person RM450 per boat RM400 per boat
On board up to 20 people per boat, with other guests your group, up to 8 people your group, up to 8 people
Start 9:00am or 2:00pm, subject to availability any time from 9:00am to 1:00pm from 9:00am to 1:00pm
Jetty Teluk Baru Jetty Teluk Baru Jetty (Cenang area) Kuah Jetty (Marble Jetty)
Stops three islands, plus photo stops from the boat three islands, plus photo stops from the boat three islands
Deposit none: book now, pay later none for one boat RM100 deposit
Cancelling free with at least 2 hours' notice ask when you book deposit not refunded within 24 hours

The sharing and Teluk Baru boats add photo stops seen from the boat: Lion Rock, Dayang Bunting mountain, Jong Island, Dino Island and fish feeding. The Kuah boat's listing names the three island stops only. LangkawiGo's page on island hopping Langkawi sets out the three boats with photos of the stops.

Which booking fits your group

  • Solo travellers and couples happy with a fixed time: a sharing seat.
  • One or two people who want their own start time: a private boat, which has no minimum group size.
  • Families and groups of up to 8 near Pantai Cenang or Pantai Tengah: the private boat from Teluk Baru, with no deposit for one boat.
  • Groups of up to 8 staying near Kuah: the private boat from Kuah Jetty, with a RM100 deposit.
  • More than 8 people on private boats (more than one boat), or 20 people or more: a 50% deposit.

Illustrative, at the listed prices: two sharing seats are RM100 (2 x RM50 per person) against RM450 per boat from Teluk Baru, so a couple choosing a private boat pays for the start time and the space. Eight sharing seats are RM400 (8 x RM50 per person), the same as a Kuah boat at RM400 per boat, so a full group chooses on timing, jetty and deposit.

How to book island hopping in Langkawi on WhatsApp

There is no booking form. You message the LangkawiGo team on WhatsApp with your date and group size; they check availability and send the details. Put everything in the first message:

  1. Your date, and a second date if you can.
  2. The number of people.
  3. Sharing seat or private boat and, for a private boat, Teluk Baru or Kuah.
  4. The time: for the Langkawi island hopping sharing tour, the 9:00am or 2:00pm departure; for a private boat, a start between 9:00am and 1:00pm.
  5. Your hotel, so the team can say whether the free transfer from Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah covers you.

Keep the reply: when you book over chat, the thread is your record of what was agreed.

When money changes hands

Two of the three bookings involve no money until the jetty:

  • Sharing seat: no deposit; you book now and pay later, at the jetty counter on the day.
  • Private boat from Teluk Baru: no deposit for one boat; you pay at the jetty.
  • Private boat from Kuah: a RM100 deposit confirms the booking.
  • 20 people or more, or more than one boat: a 50% deposit confirms it.

The jetty counter takes cash, card, bank transfer or e-wallet. For you, a deposit marks the bookings where cancelling late costs money; our guide to why some bookings take a deposit and others don't covers the business side.

Budget for what the price leaves out: snorkel sets at RM15 per set, the Pregnant Maiden Lake entrance fee, optional activities such as banana boats or kayaks, and the transfer if you stay outside Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah. Lunch is not included: buy it at the island cafés or bring a light meal. Ask about the lake fee when you book.

The island hopping cancellation policy, by booking type

Terms differ by booking, and one rule covers all of them: no refund once you have boarded.

  • Sharing seat: free cancellation with at least 2 hours' notice.
  • Private boat from Teluk Baru: no deposit is held for one boat; ask how much notice the team wants if plans change.
  • Private boat from Kuah: the RM100 deposit is not refunded if you cancel within 24 hours.
  • 20 people or more, or more than one boat: cancelling more than 3 days before, no charge; 48-72 hours before, 50%; less than 24 hours before, 100%; a no-show is charged in full.

The big-group table skips the window between 24 and 48 hours, so get that answer in writing before you pay a 50% deposit.

Weather days: what a postponement means

LangkawiGo's weather rule is short: trips are postponed or cancelled for strong wind, rough sea or thunderstorms, following the Langkawi Marine Department's advisory, and deposit-paid bookings can reschedule or get a full refund. With no deposit, on a sharing seat or one private boat from Teluk Baru, nothing has been paid before the jetty, so a weather call costs you the slot, not money; ask the team for another date.

MetMalaysia describes a Southwest Monsoon from late May to September and a Northeast Monsoon from November to March. In the inter-monsoon periods between them, mornings are usually clear and thunderstorms tend to form in the afternoon; in the west-coast states those storms bring the heaviest average monthly rain, and they are more frequent from April to May and from October to November. None of that decides whether your boat sails, but in those months it is a reason to take the 9:00am sharing departure or an early private start, and to book early in your stay so a postponed trip has days to move to.

On the day: the lake walk, the guide and the snorkeling

Three expectations to set before you choose, especially with older relatives or young children:

  • The lake walk. At Dayang Bunting, a 5-10 minute walk leads to the lake; guests who prefer not to walk can wait at the entrance. The stop lasts about 45 minutes to 1 hour on the island. Wear a life jacket in the lake.
  • No guide. It is a sightseeing trip handled by the boatman, not a guided tour.
  • Light snorkeling. Island hopping is mainly a sightseeing trip with simple, shallow snorkeling only: not a coral area like Pulau Payar.

The Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark explains the lake: it formed where a large cave collapsed, and it is named for the hill outline that looks like a pregnant maiden.

Confirm before you go: a checklist

By the day before, the WhatsApp thread should answer each line. If one is missing, ask.

  1. Booking and date: sharing seat or private boat, and the day.
  2. Time: 9:00am or 2:00pm sharing, or a private start between 9:00am and 1:00pm.
  3. Jetty: Teluk Baru or Kuah (Marble Jetty), and where to meet.
  4. Group size: up to 20 people per sharing boat, up to 8 per private boat.
  5. Price and unit: per person or per boat.
  6. Deposit: none, RM100 (Kuah private boat) or 50% (20 people or more, or more than one boat), and how to pay it.
  7. Cancellation notice: the window for your booking type.
  8. Transfer: your pickup point, and whether it is the free transfer from Pantai Cenang or Pantai Tengah.
  9. Extras: money for the lake entrance fee, a snorkel set at RM15 per set, and lunch at the island cafés.
  10. Weather plan: a second date, and what happens to any deposit.

FAQ

Can two people book a Langkawi private boat trip?

Yes. Private boats have no minimum: one or two people can book a whole boat, at RM450 per boat from Teluk Baru or RM400 per boat from Kuah, for up to 8 people.

Can I move my date if my plans change?

On a weather day, deposit-paid bookings can reschedule or get a full refund. For a change of plans on your side, ask how a date change works when you book, and get the answer in the thread.

How do I check that an island-hopping operator is licensed?

Ask for the licence number and look it up. MOTAC, Malaysia's Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, publishes a searchable register of licensed travel agencies. LangkawiGo holds MOTAC licence no. 10113, for inbound and outbound tours and ticketing. The register lists the licence under LangkawiGo Escape Holidays Sdn. Bhd. with its licence period, so you can see whether it is current for your dates. Check before you pay a deposit to any operator.

What can go wrong with an island-hopping booking?

Three things, mostly. Weather can postpone the trip on the day you planned, which hurts most on a short stay. A sharing departure may be full at your preferred time, especially for a group that needs several seats. And money is at risk only where a deposit is: the RM100 on a Kuah private boat if you cancel within 24 hours, or up to a 100% charge for a group of 20 or more that cancels less than 24 hours before.

Book the seat or the boat, then confirm it

Island hopping in Langkawi is an easy reservation once you name what you are reserving: a seat on a sharing boat, or a whole private boat from Teluk Baru or Kuah. That choice sets the price unit, the deposit and how late you can cancel; the WhatsApp thread holds the rest. To book, check the current prices and terms on the LangkawiGo website, message the team with your date and group size, and keep the reply as your booking record.
